Sam Hibbins MP, Victorian Greens LGBTI spokesperson, has affirmed the Greens commitment to ‘Equal Rights. Equal Laws.’ for LGBTI communities in Victoria.

Sam Hibbins will use his position in the Victorian lower house to pursue much needed law reforms to:

  • remove the blanket exemptions under the Equal Opportunity Act
  • remove discrimination in the Adoption Act
  • amend the Birth, Deaths and Marriages Act to ensure that intersex and transgender people are able to easily alter their sex on all official documents

“The Greens victory in the seat of Prahran provides a historic opportunity to ensure that all Victorians including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people are equal under the law,” Mr Hibbins said.

“It is an honour to be appointed the new Greens spokesperson for LGBTI issues, I am committed taking action on LGBTI equality within Parliament and continuing the Greens leadership on equality for LGBTI communities.”

“Current laws that allow discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity have no place in today’s society and do not reflect the values of the wider community. I am optimistic that’s these practical, common sense changes to the law can be achieved in the current term of parliament.”
