Call for Victorian Parliament to support marriage equality

Thursday, May 28th 2015

Victorian Greens LGBTI spokesperson Sam Hibbins has called on the State Government to debate and support a motion supporting marriage equality.

“On 12 February 2015, the first sitting day in the New Year, I moved the following notice of motion as one of my first actions in Legislative Assembly”

To move, That this House — (a) supports marriage equality; and (b) calls on the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia to amend the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) to provide for marriage equality.

“In practice such a motion would not normally be debated due the unusual practice of not having an allocated time for private members business in Victorian Legislative Assembly.”

“However, given the recent timetable outlined by the Australian Greens for their federal marriage equality bill with a debate June 18 and vote on November 12, it is critical that Victoria demonstrates its support for marriage equality.”

“The support of marriage equality by the Legislative Assembly, the house that forms government, would be a powerful statement and assist in the passage of the federal bill.”

“I am calling on the leaders of all parties and all members to assist in the debate and successful passage of this motion”
