Allocate more Grand Final tickets to footy fans
MEDIA RELEASE
The Greens are calling on the state government to step in to ensure more members of competing clubs can attend the AFL Grand Final.
The Major Sporting Event Act 2009 stipulates the Minister for Tourism & Major Events can approve, with or without modifications, or reject the ticket scheme for events such as the AFL Grand Final.
Under the Greens plan, the Minister for Tourism & Major Events would only approve the AFL Grand Final ticket scheme if competing club members could access a minimum of 60% of available tickets.
Greens sport spokesperson Sam Hibbins said, "Our plan would see more loyal AFL club members able to attend footy’s biggest day and be a boon for Victoria’s economy in the event of an all interstate grand final."
“This change would bring the AFL Grand Final into line with other major sporting events such as the FA Cup & Champions League Final which allocate a majority of tickets to clubs.”
“Having seen the mighty Bombers win the flag twice, I know how important the Grand Final is to club members. Club members are the lifeblood of our footy clubs and they should be prioritised come Grand Final day," he said.
