Members Statement: Privatisation policy

Mr HIBBINS (Prahran) — It is time to turn the page on the era of privatisation and neoliberalism in Victoria. For the past 25 years Victorian governments have been privatising public assets like energy, transport, the training sector, social services and even prisons. The current government has sold off the port of Melbourne. Now they want to sell off the land titles office, public housing estates, disability group homes and even Federation Square. And what have we got for it? An energy system that is broken, a public transport system that cannot cope with demand, a TAFE and training sector trashed by dodgy private providers, public housing run-down and now being sold off, inequality rising and wage growth low.

Members Statement: Public Housing

Mr HIBBINS (Prahran) — I rise to oppose the government's sell-off of public housing land to private developers, including at Bangs Street in Prahran. We need more public housing and we need better public housing, not a sell-off plan that will only slightly increase the number of units, reduce capacity by reducing the number of bedrooms, and forever limit the amount of public housing that can be put on these estates by selling off around 70 per cent of the estate.

Prahran electorate housing

Mr HIBBINS (Prahran) — It is clear to everyone in the Prahran electorate that homelessness has increased with a number of people sleeping rough in the Chapel Street area. I always point out that this is just the tip of the iceberg with many more people experiencing homelessness in insecure or unsafe housing rather than living on the street. Having spoken to local housing agencies, I was shocked by just how few options there are locally to place people experiencing homelessness. This results in agencies sending people to outer suburbs or even country towns where they have no ability to support them or know whether their accommodation is stable and of course away from their family or support network, resulting in many people simply returning to that very same service.

South Yarra Public Housing Tenants

Mr HIBBINS — I attended a community barbecue with Greens candidate for Higgins, Jason Ball, which was hosted by the South Yarra Public Tenants Association at the Horace Petty Estate. It was a pleasure to chat with residents, many of them from a Russian background, about the estate. We have had some great wins at the estate, with new security doors installed and an upgrade to the South Yarra Kindergarten. I look forward to continuing to advocate on behalf of residents.

Mr HIBBINS (Prahran) — I recently visited the TRY South Yarra Preschool in the Horace Petty estate, where I joined children for an impromptu musical performance and a kick of the footy. TRY South Yarra Preschool provides quality child care to over 40 families in the South Yarra community.
