To Members of the Victorian Parliament:
Under Victoria’s laws, religious schools and organisations are allowed to discriminate against teachers and staff on the basis of their sexuality or gender identity.
That means teachers or other employees could be fired or refused employment just for being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
The Victorian Government has introduced the Equality Opportunity Amendment (Religious Exceptions) Bill 2016 to make changes to the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
Premier Daniel Andrews told the Australian Christian Lobby before the election that these changes will still allow for discrimination against teachers, only offering protection to non-teaching staff such as gardeners.
Further, the bill does nothing to protect the rights of LGBTI students (Click here to show your support for LGBTI students).
The Victorian Greens’ Equality 4 Teachers & Staff Amendments will protect all employees from discrimination by removing the right of religious schools and organisations to discriminate against teachers and staff on the basis of sexuality or gender identity.
All LGBTI employees in Victoria should be protected in their workplace regardless of who their employer is.
